Ferdinand Magellan
Ferdinand Magellan is most widely known because he (his voyage) was the first to circumnavigate the globe.
Ferdinand Magellan set sail for the "Spice Islands" in March of 1519. King Charles I of Spain granted Magellan permission to sail to the Spice Islands and said Magellan would get one-fifth of the profit from the voyage. Magellan planned to find a route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. While planning to sail around the southern tip of South America, Magellan sailed through The Straight of Magellan and reached the Pacific Ocean. While on his voyage, Ferdinand Magellan was killed by natives on the island of Mactan. His crew finished the voyage and became the first people to circumnavigate the earth.
